The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke with the activist Malala Yousafzai to mark International Day Of The Girl 2020. The Duke and Duchess discussed Covid’s devastating impact on girls’ education in a videochat with Malala Yousafzai. In 2011 the United Nations declared Oct. 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child to promote girls’ rights and address the challenges girls face around the world.
The video chat covers how the pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on young women’s access to education. Research by the Malala Fund has suggested that 20 million secondary-school aged girls may never return to the classroom after the health crisis is over. Co-founded by student and Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, Malala Fund works to create a world where all girls can learn and lead.
