On September 25, 2020, The Queen attended the celebration held on the occasion of the restoration's completion and the ceremony where she was appointed as the honorary citizen of Lillehammer by Lillehammer Mayor Ingunn Trosholmen. The home has been opened as a museum which is open to the public.
Sonja's childhood home was built in the 1930s in the residential area at Maihaugen. The home has been restored like it was while the queen lived there between 1937 and 1968. The house was built for the Haraldsen family, and Queen Sonja lived most of her life there until she got married to Crown Prince Harald in 1968.
