The film celebrates the last-minute victory of the Soviet basketball team at the 1972 Munich Olympics, when the United States was defeated for the first time in 36 years.
It has taken in 3 billion Russian rubles (just under 50 million U.S. dollars) at box offices in Russia.
"Three Seconds" is the directorial debut of Danila Kozlovsky. He's currently Russia's most popular movie star, and has been nicknamed the Russian Tom Cruise.
It will be the second film from overseas to be released in Chinese cinemas in recent years that is focused around a sporting contest.It follows the release of Indian blockbuster "Dangal" two years ago, which told the story of two female wrestlers trained by their father to compete in the Commonwealth Games.
