Scheveningen, Netherlands: Brazilian BBQ Feast at Rodizio

Not being a big meat eater, I wasn’t really expecting a lot for this BBQ dinner. Rodizio in Scheveningen, The Hague seems to be quite a popular place if you fancy an endless serving of grilled meat or anything Brazilian for that matter.

Dutchman and I were here last summer, spending a lazy day in The Hague and then at Scheveningen beach. We visit the beach city once every few years during the warmer months. We quite liked the vibe here, although it can get very touristy on the boulevard, and I mean local tourists in the whole sense of it.

I was able to save some restaurant stamps from an Albert Heijn (largest chain of supermarket here in the Netherlands) promotion. If you are able to get 12 stamps, you can avail the 2nd meal set from a member restaurant in the promotion program for free, drinks not included though. The visit to the beach side city was an excuse to make use of this dinner promotion, and after a quick run through of the member restaurants in Scheveningen, I zeroed in to Rodizio. The Brazilian restaurant has good reviews, is situated centrally and I thought this would be a safe restaurant for the meat eater Dutchman.

When we arrived, I presented the dinner promotional booklet with the Albert Heijn stamps and we took our seats outside on the terrace. We were told that salads and side dishes are available on the buffet table inside. It is an all-you-can-eat restaurant after all. We were given some bread on the table and a lovely pre-dinner banana. The sweet banana was a highlight, a very delicious piece of appetiser, it was one of the simplest and tastiest banana I have ever had. And I know bananas because I was born in the tropics.

We were also informed that the meat servers and carvers will be going around to service us different types of meat from the grilling station. Nice! In addition, we were given a queue card to place on the table – it is a back-to-back green and red card. If we place the green card face up this means we want to having more grilled meat dishes served. But if we do not want any more meat, we just place the red card face up.

Dessert will be last of course which we will be ordering from the menu card.

Because I was not really planning on eating a lot of grilled meat, I served myself with vegetable and seafood side dishes from the buffet. The dishes in the buffet were quite good but we were told that another Brazilian restaurant offers a much better buffet variety. For me this was really just enough. I mean, how much can you eat?

The grilled meats were also quite good and they do offer, at least to me, a variety. The grilled meat servers and carvers were all over the floor eager to slice a piece into your plate. Some of them kept coming back to us and we have to remind them that we have the red card face up. We even saw someone with a roasted whole pineapple.

By the time we reached dessert, I was already full. The desserts were huge, they were okay but nothing spectacular, so I heavily leaned on enjoying my coffee hoping to make some room to breathe in. The Italians believe that drinking espresso (they call this café in the south of Europe) helps hasten digestion which is why it is important to drink one at the end of each meal.

And because this is a Brazilian restaurant, the whole dining affair is not complete without the carnival dancing and some live music. During the whole dinner, we were entertained by live dancers twice, both donning on a different costume each time. The first one was a carnival themed dance and the second one, was more sporty. On top of this they also have a live music duo of guitar and acapella entertaining guests in between.

Overall this was a nice dinner out. Definitely a good place for the all-you-can-eat meat lovers. They have however a different pricing (more expensive) for the weekends.

Rodizio is located on the little square called Gevers Deynootplein in front of the Kurhaus Hotel. It is very easy to find, you cannot miss this place.

Our table and view at the outdoor terrace of Rodizio.

I feasted on some vegetable and seafood side dishes from the buffet table, as well as some cured sausage meats.

Queue cards to let the meat servers and carvers know if you want more meat or not.

You want a small or big piece of meat? They have a few of these guys running around serving different types of meat from pork, beef, chicken, lamb and even a roasted pineapple.

This sweet banana has got to be a highlight of this restaurant. Make sure to enjoy this and ask for another serving.

A Brazilian restaurant is not complete without some carnival dancing and entertainment!
