Taking the second place special jury prize was Sri Lankan director Sanjeewa Pushpakumara’s “Burning Birds.” Set in Sri Lanka in the turbulent year of 1989, this drama about a war widow’s struggle to raise her eight children earlier screened at this year’s Busan festival.
Among other prizes were a special mention and audience award to Korean director Yoon Ga-eun’s “The World of Us” and the student jury prize to Philippines director Eduardo Roy Jr.’s “Ordinary
People.”
Unspooling Nov. 19-27, Tokyo Filmex opened with maverick Korean director Kim Ki-duk’s “The Net” and closed with the three-director Hong Kong omnibus “Trivisa.” The festival also held its annual Talents Tokyo workshop for young producers and directors.
