It was like a rock concert when thousands of screaming fans showed up in Shanghai to watch actor Benedict Cumberbatch, actress Tilda Swinton and director Scott Derrickson promote their new Marvel film "Doctor Strange" on Sunday.

Marvel Studios' "Doctor Strange" follows the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange, who, while trying to recover after a horrific car accident, discovers powerful magic in a mysterious place known as Kamar-Taj – the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality.

Cumberbatch, whose appearance triggered a sensational scene from fans last night, said it was amazing to play the role. He mentioned that the difference between Dr. Strange and other Marvel superheroes such as Thor is that the character is mortal not god.

Before the premiere red carpet, Marvel Studios screened 40-minute footages for Chinese media.

China.org.cn reporter saw the clips, which showed the origin of the character and showcased some mind-blowing action scenes, including one filmed in Hong Kong. It feels somewhat like an upgraded version of "Matrix" plus "Inception." But Derrickson said there would be more than that.

"The whole idea going into 'Doctor Strange' was to make a new kind of movie, not just a new kind of superhero movie. To use big-budget visual effects, to do things we haven't seen before. So the audience can expect to have new experiences that they haven’t had before in 'Doctor Strange'," Derrickson said.

"Doctor Strange" stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt and Scott Adkins, with Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.

"Doctor Strange" will open in Chinese and U.S. theaters on Nov. 4.
