On June 15, 2021, Queen Maxima of The Netherlands opened a 3D-printed steel pedestrian bridge on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal in Amsterdam. The innovative steel pedestrian bridge has smart sensors and can measure traffic flows, crowds, air quality and temperature, among other things. The bridge designed by Joris Laarman Lab and MX3D has a futuristic style, with shiny steel waves of 12.2 meters long, 6.3 meters wide and has a weight of 6,000 kilos. After the opening with the help of a robot, Queen Máxima spoke with the designers, builders, municipality authorities and local residents.
