Loosely based on Lucas Martell's 2009 animated short "Pigeon: Impossible," the film is jointly directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, both making their directorial debuts, and features the voices of Will Smith and Tom Holland, alongside Rashida Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Reba Mcentire and Karen Gillan in supporting roles. Award-winning Mark Ronson serves as the film's executive music producer.
The plot follows a superstar secret agent who is accidentally transformed into a pigeon by an intelligent young scientist; the duo must then work together to prevent a cyber terrorist who has stolen an attack drone imperiling the whole world.
The duo of Smith and Holland, two of most popular Hollywood stars among Chinese audiences known for their roles in previous blockbusters such as "Men In Black" and "Spider-Man" franchises, achieve great chemistry in the film.
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has gained an approval rating of 73% based on 89 reviews and the Audience Score is as high as 91%. The site's critical consensus reads, "A cheerfully undemanding animated adventure that's elevated by its voice cast, Spies in Disguise is funny, fast-paced, and family-friendly enough to satisfy." Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A–" on an A+ to F scale. It also received rave reviews after its premiere in Shanghai on Dec. 27, 2019.
Before it opens in China on Jan. 3, the film has already grossed $50 million worldwide.
