Gillian Chung joins Irene Wan on-stage for first solo concert

(Toggle) Hong Kong actress-singer Irene Wan recently staged her first ever solo concert ‘Tide’, with special guest, the newly-hitched Hong Kong singer-actress Gillian Chung.

As this is the 52-year-old’s first solo concert, she chose to open it with a VCR documenting her showbiz career, from her debut to the present.

She gave a little insight as to why she decided to name her concert ‘Tide' as well, sharing that it was the most important work that she’s been involved in throughout her career. Tide was the name of her character in the 1992 TVB drama, Vengeance, that she acted in. The theme song for the drama, which was also named ‘Tide’, was sung by her as well.

Dressed in an eye-catching V-neck outfit, the actress-singer thrilled with renditions of classic songs like ‘Tide’, ‘Brink of Love and Pain’, ‘Every Step You Take’, and more.

Irene was later joined by Gillian on stage, and the duo performed ‘Tail’ together, with Irene sharing that she has known Gillian for a long time, even before joining her current entertainment agency, Emperor Motion Pictures. “At that tim, when there were so many things troubling us, we met at a gathering organised by a close mutual friend,” she recalled.

The 52-year-old mused that after spending so many years in the entertainment industry, both of them have encountered a number of highs and lows, but what was most important was to be able to be firm in their own thinking, and have self-confidence.

Agreeing, Gillian added, “If you are not confident in yourself, then no one will respect you, [we] must have confidence.”

Irene also praised Gillian for being extremely hardworking, saying, “After tying the knot, she took the initiative to approach me to rehearse for the performance, I’m really grateful for her.”

Irene’s husband, businessman Kenneth Ho also came on-stage during the concert to present a bouquet of flowers to her, surprising the actress-singer, who mentioned that he has always been a very shy individual.

“I’m a very bull-headed and reckless person, so I’m really grateful as he has always tolerated [my behaviour] and shown me love,” she confessed, showing her appreciation for her husband.

Irene gained popularity in the 80s for her role in Cantonese drama Lonely Fifteen but stepped out of showbiz after tying the knot with Kenneth in 2000 and subsequently returned to star in a few productions in 2016. The couple have no kids of their own and adopted a son, Xavier Ho, in 2010.
