Actors and filmmakers shine as they kick off the 7th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) on Sunday in Beijing.
Directors such as Danish legend Bille August, Emir Kusturica, as well as actors and actresses such as Aaron Kwok, Liu Yifei, Aamir Khan and more all appeared on the star-studded red carpet in the State Production Base of China Film in the remote but scenic Huairou District of Beijing.
Fifteen films from 19 countries and regions shortlisted out of 424 entries from 59 countries and regions on six continents through five rounds of selection for Tiantan Awards were highlighted at the opening ceremony. The jury will vote for winners and announce the results at the closing ceremony of the festival on April 23. Two Chinese films, "Operation Mekong" and "Mr. No Problem," are contenders.
Bille August, the award's jury president, says that there is no fixed criterion for a good film. He hoped they would avoid being bias through an open mind, "Watching a film is a pleasant experience. It can make our souls as pure as children. Whatever touches your heart is a good film."
At the opening ceremony, "This Is Not What I Expected" was introduced as the opening film of the festival. This is the first time that a debut film from a new director has been selected as the opening film. Produced by Peter Chan and Jojo Hui, directed by Derek Hui and starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhou Dongyu, Sun Yizhou and Xi Mengyao, "This Is Not What I Expected" tells a fantastic love story of a man and a woman brought together by food.
Various events will be held during the film festival, such as Sino-Foreign Film Co-production Forum, China Film Distribution Summit, International Digital Cinema Technology Forum, Summit on the Beauty of Film, Focus on Italy section and Documentary section.
The Film Carnival section will take place in Yangsong Town of Huairou District, the State Production Base of China Film Group and Stellar Mega Jincheng Movie-Making Base from April 15 - May 1.
Consisting of a Film Theme Day, interactive effect experience, theme show and sales of film merchandise, the carnival will fully extend the key elements of the film industry to align with public needs and to build an interactive entertainment bridge between the film industry and the audience.
Beijing Film Panorama this year will also dedicate two sections as "Person of Focus" and "Tribute to Masters" to the creations of Sylvia Chang, an all-round talented lady in the movie world, David Lynch, talent of the US cult films, and Michelangelo Antonioni, the Italian Master.
The panorama also features masterpieces including "Gone With the Wind" and "Doctor Zhivago" that have just been restored to present the treasure of the film history in a longitudinal dimension.
