Jay Chou’s Chengdu concert cancelled due to excavation works

(Toggle) Jay Chou has been a busy man – after stopping by Singapore for his The Invincible World Tour in 2016, he’s gone on to tour in several Chinese cities, including Qingdao, Fuzhou and Changsha.

His fans in Chengdu, however, were left disappointed when his gig there was officially cancelled, especially since he has brought several of his previous concert tours to the city. Taiwanese rock band Mayday, which is also on tour, gave Chengdu a miss this time around.

Netizens investigated the reason behind the cancellation, and claimed that it was because the Chengdu Sports Centre Stadium, where major concerts are usually held, has been closed for excavation works.

According to reports, a landscape gallery dating back to the Ming Dynasty was discovered under the stadium, which has led authorities to decide to relocate the stadium. Photos circulating around the internet have shown that most of the stadium’s structure has been removed and ancient wells, streets and other relics have been painstakingly unearthed.

In response to queries about the reason behind the cancellation, Jay Chou’s label, JVR Music, shared that they were unable to secure an alternative location for the concert after they were notified that the sports stadium would undergo renovations, and suggested that fans head to neighbouring cities such as Chongqing and Kunming to enjoy the concert.
