Is China warming up to Kai Ko again?

(Toggle) Taiwanese actor Kai Ko has received the nod of approval from various awards shows for his performance in the movie The Road to Mandalay.

Last year, the 25-year-old was nominated for the Best Actor award at the Golden Horse Awards. He was also recognised by a Chinese movie magazine, with industry professionals from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong voting him as the “Movie King”.

Yesterday (March 19), Kai showed up at an awards ceremony in Beijing, China, where he expressed his feelings in an interview, saying, “I’ve worked hard to finish filming the movie, and I look forward to be able to receive recognition from different award ceremonies.”

Later that night, he was announced as the Best Actor of 2016 for his acting in The Road to Mandalay, while the movie’s director, Midi Z, bagged the Best Director award. The Road to Mandalay also won the Top 10 Movie award.

Kai Ko was caught for using marijuana in China in 2014 alongside fellow actor Jaycee Chan. Kai was detained for two weeks and deported, with his image taking a hit from the scandal. In the months that followed, Kai had to halt filming for his upcoming projects and disappeared from the limelight.

The Road to Mandalay was his comeback film after the scandal.
